Free Pattern Overview and Download Instructions
Our 2006 catalog cover design was taken from a late 1950's - early 1960's sketch by Al Stohlman for a proposed cover for a Craftool Co. catalog cover (never used) which we recently found in our Al Stohlman archives. It was tooled, dyed and finished by Tony Laier, Tandy Leather Factory's Director of Research and Development.

Tony used the following tools and supplies to create the tooling: ASB Leather Handle Swivel Knife #35049-00, ASB HCS1055 1/4" Angle detail Swivel Knife Blade #35051-03, Modeling Tool #8039-02, Craftool stamps: C431, P368, P370, P217, P234, P236, B701, B198, F976, F910, V745, V412, V708, S932, S631, S706, H907, U851, U855, A104 and A104-2.
You might try using a variety of different stamps on the design and see how it changes. One of the best books on the fundamentals of carving leather is Craftool Tech Tips #66056-00 by Al Stohlman.
Tony used the dry brush technique to add shades of color to the carving. For instructions on dry brush coloriing, see Coloring Leather by Al Stohlman. It is finished with Satin Shene #2611.
